I should look up the reference, but there is a study carried out in, I think, California. The study was on the non-smoking spouses of smokers and was initially funded by the cancer society (or the US equivalent). One year before the end of the study (it was a long term one), a set of preliminary findings was released, showing the lack of a significant affect, whereupon the cancer society refused to fund the last year. The researcher was only able to fund the completion by accepting funds form the Tobacco Institute, and this was of course used to discredit the study.
